On September 8th, 2022, at 11:00 AM, the Department of English and the Women Development Cell, Rayburn College, co-organized the International Literacy Day 2022 at its College Faculty Lounge today. Miss Livia Tinglianhoi hosted the program, and Dr. Marina Laltlinzo Infimate started the program with a welcome address and was complimented by Miss Vungthianmuang. This was followed by a speech from Dr. Siamkhanthang Neihsial, IQAC Coordinator of the College. This was followed by a Book Talk from the Resource Person, Miss Manlunkim, Asst. Prof. Department of English, Churachandpur College.
Miss Manlunkim, the speaker of the program, emphasized Since 1967, International Literacy Day (ILD) has been celebrated on September 8 to spread awareness about the importance of literacy for individuals, communities, and societies and the need for intensified efforts toward more literate societies. It is imminent to raise awareness in the world of literary issues people face and endorse campaigns that help increase literacy for all people.
Despite the progress, we know literacy challenges persist and are distributed unevenly across countries and populations. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on linguistic diversity in education and literacy development to overcome the challenges and achieve Sustainable Development Goals.
This year’s International Literacy Day is celebrated worldwide under the theme, “Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces,” and will be an opportunity to rethink the fundamental importance of literacy learning spaces to build resilience and ensure quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all.
After an Interactive session among the program participants, the program was adjourned with words of thanks from Dr. Siambiakmawi, HoD, Department of English & Coordinator, Women Development Cell(WDC), Rayburn College.
