The Department of Political Science was established in 2001. The department runs Undergraduate Honours and Post Graduate Courses. The teaching and research programme of the Department is based on a comprehensive social science approach that integrates and interrogates sociological, economic, philosophical, and cultural dimensions. It encourages a comprehensive study of the field of politics, keeping especially the Indian reality in focus.
Politics or Political Science as Greek regarded as “Master of all Sciences” taught in various universities all over the World. Opting Political Science at undergraduate level is quite interesting for those who make career in academics, civil services, & media. Concepts like State, Human Rights, Citizenship, Nation, Liberalism, Governance, etc are some of the widely readable terminologies in newspapers & magazines. This subject is very popular in Manipur due to its vibrant course structure initiated by Manipur University. In every academic year, the majority of students opted for Political Science among Social Sciences disciplines. Our students showed a keen interest in State politics & governance, the Panchayat election, debates at the Legislative Assembly, the powers & positions of the Chief Minister, relationships between the Central & States government, etc. It helps our student’s zeal of learning and understanding the subject in depth. Students of our college need a formal career counseling workshop with external experts in Political Science, though this type of career guidance is also provided during classes on assigned course papers. But, for a general understanding of future prospects, it must be mentioned that this subject is not only confined to academics and researchers. There are lots of career opportunities in this subject e. g; it helps in the preparation of civil services, and state govt. services, and various staff selection commission exams. One can also have a career in media & journalism, in NGOs, Law firms, legislative research programs, and as content writers in various publishing houses. They can work as a research associate in various research organizations, governmental bodies, philanthropic organizations and lastly at United Nations.
The Department of Political Science endeavors to generate new knowledge and produce students who are trained in Political Science to develop skills, such as critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and written and oral communication, necessary to engage effectively in the study and practice of politics in order to become fully realized thinkers, professionals, and community members. It also aims to develop the ability to make connections between theory and practice, between global and local events, and across academic disciplines.
- To instill a reflective and innovative perspective on learning and problem-solving.
- Prepare the students to become responsible citizens.
- To make the students cultivate critical thinking and build rigorous and persuasive arguments.
- To produce an ethically conscious mind that would help them to be creative and build constructive approaches to the challenges faced by them either individually or socially.
