The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides opportunity to the student youth of 11th & 12th Class of schools at +2 Board level and student youth of Technical Institution, Graduate & Post Graduate at colleges and University level of India to take part in various government led community service activities & programmes. The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands on experience to young students in delivering community service. Since inception of the NSS in the year 1969, the number of students strength increased from 40,000 to over 3.8 million up to the end of March 2018 students in various universities, colleges and Institutions of higher learning have volunteered to take part in various community service programmes.

ABOUT NSS
The National Service Scheme (NSS) was started in the year 1969 by Ministry of Education and Culture, Government of India in collaboration with State Government. Manipur University adopted the activities of NSSsince 1980 and at present around 86 NSS units is operating in 60 different colleges and institutions affiliated to the university.
Rayburn College, Churachandpur had been participating in the scheme from the year 2007. The service has been established with a fundamental aim to create social consciousness, sense of responsibility and personality development among the students through involvement in social work and community service. From the date of its inception, volunteers and Programme Officers of this unit have been already rendering their voluntary services for the expansion of NSS activities in taking up various programmes.Presently Rayburn college has two units- Unit I and Unit II, and the units have been looked after by two Program Officers’ Shri Lt. Suan L. Hauzel and Ms Mercy Chingnunhoih of Psychology Department. As per the NSS guidelines, various programmes have been under taken up under Regular and Special camping programmes.

Orientation and Enrolment program:
Orientation and Enrolment program regarding the service, volunteers’ responsibilities and works were held at every new Academic session. For the academic session 2021, enrolment drive was conducted during the month of April and as many as 200 new volunteers enrolled for both the units.
Covid-19 Mass Awareness Campaign- Vaccination Mahotsav:
72 volunteers of our college with both the POs conducted Covid-19 Mass awareness campaign on the theme “Unite to Fight Corona”, during 11th to 14th April, 2021. The volunteers participated in mass awareness vaccination mahotsav campaigh to register and vaccinated people above 45 years of age. The NSS volunteers also distributed face masks to local vendors and making local community aware to keep safe from Covid19.
Medical Camp:
The NSS unit organized One day Medical camp for Rayburn College Staff in collaboration with CMO, Churachandpur on April, 5, 2021. The main purpose is to provide the staffs of Rayburn college with free medical consultation, information regarding diet and exercise, full body checkup so that they would stay protected from possible sicknesses.
Cleaning,Beautifying and Plantation :
Social work programme on Cleaning, Beautification work for collecting variety of flowers and plants and Plantation of trees at the college campus was organized on 12th March, 2021 in collaboration with the Environmental and Eco club. In this programme 20 male and 20 female volunteers with the POs participated along with the faculty staffs.
Substance addiction awareness programme:
Drug addiction and substance abuse awareness program were organized by the unit and in collaboration with the District administration, Churachandpur on 19th, February, 2021 in the campus. 70 volunteers attended this awareness program. This program was conducted to create awareness about the danger of substance addiction, its causal factors, and what preventive measures could be taken up especially for the young college going students.
World Water Day
The NSS unit in collaboration with the NCC of Rayburn College organized the Observation of World Water Day on 22nd March, 2021 to focus on the importance of water in our daily life and to live a sustainable life. Unit II PO Ms. Mercy Chingnunhoih brief the students on daily attitudes and practices that contribute to saving water. A Poster making on Save Water was conducted with students on the importance of good hygiene, sanitation and conservation of water.
Swacch Bharat Abhiyan
In collaborating with the NCC, Swacch Bharat Abhiyan campaign was organized. The campaign was led by Unit I PO Mr. SuanHauzel, Pledge cards were administered and distributed to all the students and the staff of Rayburn College. Posters were put up on the notice board as well as in various place in the campus to aware students and staff about cleanliness. Class to class awareness on cleanliness were also organized.
Participation in seminars and training programs:
The college NSS unit volunteers attended various seminars and training programs held in the college, in other colleges and NGOs. NashaMukt Bharat Campaign organized by the District Administration and the college, etc.
Seven days Residential Camp:
NSS unit of college organized seven days residential camp every academic session during the summer break. The camping was held usually in the college campus, and the three adopted village. It was attended by the volunteers and the two POs. During the camp, the volunteers conducted various activities such as skit and debate, talks were organized on different topics such as on moral values, Swacch Bharat Abhiyan, Social-networking, Mental Health, Consumer awareness, AIDS awareness and on NSS objectives. The purpose of the camp was to train the volunteers with social values, cultural values, moral values, educational and ethical values.
NSS Day celebration
NSS day is celebrated every year on the 24th September. All NSS volunteer students celebrated by doing various activities for creating awareness regarding cleanliness, blood donation, gender sensitization, games and sports etc. NSS day is celebrated every year on the 24th September.
