Dr. Chinkhanlun Guite, Bursar & Assistant Professor, St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi interacts with School of Physical Sciences students.
The discussion on the decline in mainstream science demand was organized jointly by the Research & Development Cell and IQAC of Rayburn College on the 11th of June 2024 at the Conference Hall. Dr. Chinkhanlun Guite, an esteemed Bursar & Assistant Professor at St. Stephen’s College, led the interaction with students from the School of Physical Sciences. Dr. Guite elaborated on the current trends indicating a decline in the demand for mainstream science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. He presented various factors contributing to this decline, including changing career preferences, societal perceptions, and challenges in research and development landscapes.
Dr. Guite discussed how students are increasingly opting for non-science streams or interdisciplinary fields over traditional science subjects. The discussion delved into societal attitudes towards science careers and how they impact students’ choices and aspirations. He highlighted the challenges faced in the research and development sector, including funding constraints and limited career opportunities.
Following the presentation, there was an interactive session where students and attendees engaged in discussions, shared their perspectives, and raised questions about potential solutions to address the decline in mainstream science demand.
The program provided valuable insights into the current state of mainstream science demand and the challenges it faces. It emphasized the importance of proactive measures to encourage interest and engagement in science education and careers. The collaborative effort reflects a commitment to addressing crucial issues in the field of education and research.
