Sociology is the science of society, whose major concern is sociological analysis. The scope and its focus is identical with no other sciences. As a discipline it has placed high importance to methods of research, and has its own areas of study or fields of inquiry. The Department of Sociology at Rayburn College was established in the year 2012 with the vision to equip students with sociological knowledge by providing value-based quality education and methodological and theoretical insights to enable students to analyze society and its dynamics, and produce academically-oriented, socially sensitive and responsible citizens. The department educates its students to understand social structures, social processes, social dynamics and social change in their own social context. The department believes in the all-round development of its students, and apart from academic lectures and classroom discussions, it engages its students in presentations, seminars, workshops, field trips and excursions.
At the undergraduate level, there are total eighteen Sociology Core Courses that students are required to take across eight semesters. All the Core Courses are compulsory. In addition to core courses in Sociology, a student of BA Programme Sociology will choose four Discipline Specific Elective (DSE) Courses, Six Generic Elective Courses (GEC) and eight value addition courses across the entire semesters.
The department has introduced its postgraduate M.A. Programme in Sociology in the year 2024, which is a two years course consisting of Four Semesters.
